Stephen's story

Heart UK's Dietetic Advice helped me change my diet and reduce my triglycerides

''My name is Stephen and I’m a university lecturer in my mid-40s, with two young kids and a passion for travelling.  My father, who was 79, recently passed away due to a heart attack and it was time for me to contact my GP to evaluate my risks of developing heart disease.  After a weigh-in and a blood test, the results were far from good — I had become obese, my cholesterol levels were elevated and my triglyceride levels were out of control.  The maximum triglycerides level is 2 mmol/L and mine came in at 7 mmol/L.  My diet had to change, but there was very little guidance from the NHS as to how.

I contacted Heart UK's Helpline for some advice.  I wanted more information on how I should change my diet and what the right balance of different food should be in order to help me lose weight, reduce my triglycerides and stay healthy.

What I received from HEART UK's Dietetic Advisor was valuable and detailed advice on the types of food that I should reduce or eliminate, the types that I should eat more of and the right balance of food in my diet.  It turns out that I was eating far too many refined carbohydrates, and it was damaging my health.

Since I started following my new diet, I’ve been losing weight and feeling terrific.

Thank you so much HEART UK''.
